Home Golf Simulator Cost per Hour Calculator

Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.

Estimates the net cost of owning a premium home golf simulator over the years you keep it and what every hour of play truly costs, for buyers weighing a five figure bay against a commercial simulator or the course.

Your estimate

Net cost of ownership...
Cost per year...
Cost per month...
Cost per hour of play...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

A launch monitor with a headline price tells you almost nothing about what the bay will cost you. Installation, software subscriptions, replacement impact screens, mats, projector lamps and electricity keep adding to the bill, while resale value at the end takes some of it back. What owners really want to know is what an hour of play costs once everything is counted, and whether that number beats renting a bay across town.

This calculator adds your upfront hardware and installation to your annual running costs multiplied by the years you plan to keep the bay, then subtracts what you expect to recover by selling the launch monitor and enclosure. It divides that net figure by the years and by the total hours you expect to play. Every number is yours to change, so the result is only as honest as your inputs; use a realistic hours-per-week figure, not the one you imagine in the first month.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the all-in hardware price and what installation will cost, including any electrical or framing work.
  2. Add your expected annual running costs, how many years you will keep the bay and a realistic hours-per-week figure.
  3. Set the resale percentage you expect to recover, then compare the cost per hour with what a commercial simulator bay charges near you.

What the math assumes

  • Running costs are treated as flat every year; real subscription prices and replacement needs vary, so enter an average.
  • Resale value applies to the hardware cost only; installation work is treated as unrecoverable.
  • Hours of play are your weekly average multiplied by 52 weeks for every year of ownership; no ramp-up or decline in use is modeled.
  • Financing interest, opportunity cost and any change in home value from a finished bay are excluded.
  • All figures are in US dollars and ignore inflation over the ownership period.

Frequently asked questions

Is cost per hour the right way to judge a home golf simulator?

It is the most honest single number, because it forces you to count running costs and how often you actually play. Compare it with the hourly rate at a commercial simulator bay or with a share of your course spend to see whether the bay earns its keep.

What resale percentage should I use for the hardware?

Launch monitors from established brands tend to hold value better than projectors, computers and screens, which lose most of theirs. If you are unsure, start low and see how much the result changes.

Why do the annual and hourly figures fall when I add years?

The upfront cost is spread across more years and more hours, so the per-year and per-hour numbers drop even though running costs keep adding to the total.

Does the calculator include the cost of the room itself?

No. Put any construction, flooring or soundproofing you would not otherwise do into the installation field so it is counted, and leave out work you would have done anyway.
