A golf bay is a hostile place for a projector. The image has to fill a screen that is wide and often nearly square, the projector must hang far enough forward that your body and club never cast a shadow, and the whole thing needs to clear the ceiling. Buyers routinely choose a projector on brightness and resolution alone, then discover that its throw ratio puts the lens directly above the hitting position.

This calculator uses two simple relationships. Image height is screen width divided by the aspect ratio you choose. Throw distance is the projector throw ratio multiplied by the image width, which is how manufacturers publish it. Subtracting that throw distance from your ball-to-screen distance tells you how far in front of the ball the lens will sit; a positive number means the projector hangs between you and the screen, a negative one means it hangs behind you and you will be in the beam. Lens shift and keystone are not modeled, so treat the result as a planning figure to confirm against the manufacturer calculator.

How to use this tool

  1. Measure the visible width of your impact screen and pick the aspect ratio of your enclosure.
  2. Enter the throw ratio from the projector specification sheet and the distance from ball to screen.
  3. Read the image height, throw distance and lens position, then confirm the figures with the projector maker before drilling into the ceiling.

What the math assumes

  • Throw distance equals throw ratio multiplied by image width, measured from the lens to the screen surface, as manufacturers publish it.
  • Image height comes straight from the aspect ratio; overscan, masking borders and lens offset are ignored.
  • Lens position is measured horizontally from the ball toward the screen; a positive figure means the projector hangs between you and the screen.
  • The 1 ft threshold for a clear verdict is a fixed allowance for the player and club near the hitting position, not a measured standard.
  • The ceiling check compares raw image height with ceiling height and does not account for the projector housing or a floor gap under the screen.

Frequently asked questions

What throw ratio do I need for a home golf simulator?

Low enough that the lens hangs in front of the ball. Divide your ball-to-screen distance by your screen width and choose a projector with a throw ratio comfortably below that number, allowing for the depth of the mount.

Can I use a standard throw projector by mounting it behind me?

You can, but you will be in the beam and your shadow will land on the screen during the swing. Short throw models exist for exactly this reason.

What about lens shift and keystone correction?

Neither is modeled here. Lens shift moves the image without loss; keystone crops the image and should be a last resort. Check the manufacturer calculator for the exact vertical offset.

Why is the image taller than my ceiling?

Near square ratios such as 4:3 and 1:1 produce a tall image for a given width. Choose a narrower width, a wider ratio, or accept that the image will be cropped or masked at the top and bottom.
